Looking back

  • Is there anything you think God has been saying to you this last week through His Spirit?

Looking up

Discover - How we have been served by Jesus and the service he is calling us to.

Read - John 13:1-17.

  • What do these verses tell us about Jesus’ heart?

Practice - This might seem a bit weird but if Jesus did it…get a few people in your group to wash each other’s feet. What was it like to wash someone else’s feet?

Discuss - Jesus’ whole ministry was about gathering people to himself and serving them; here at the end of his life he’s doing just that with his closest friends, the disciples. While Jesus had time on his own with his Father, most of the time he was with his friends and interacting with people.

  • Why is it important for Christians to spend time with other Christians?

  • What does the knowledge of who he is and where he’s going in verse 3 lead Jesus to in verses 4-5?

  • What is our identity in Christ? What does that lead us to?

The backdrop to Jesus washing the disciples’ feet is having the meal in the upper room where Jesus gives us the practice of meeting together as believers for the Lord’s Supper (Communion).

  • How is Jesus washing the disciple’s feet and Communion linked?

  • In v.14-15 Jesus says that his disciples are to wash one another’s feet. What do you think he means?

Looking forward

Do - Is there any way this week you can bless a brother or sister in Christ through serving them in some way?

Share – We can often find that as we try and bless others through serving we actually end up receiving more blessing ourselves! How have you been blessed through serving others?

Pray – God has given us some weird and wonderful people to walk through life with – the church! We get to walk with people through the highs and the lows; share and pray for each other now! Commit this week to pray for a different member of the group each day.
